This northern city gate of Leiden stood at the intersection of the Singel and the tiny river Mare, which was transformed into a city canal. The gate, in fact the third with that name, was built in 1665-66 to the design of city architect Willem van der Helm. The gate led to the road to Oegstgeest and Haarlem, which ran over the Maredijk. In 1864 it was decided to demolish the dilapidated gate. [text: Albert Elen, 2020]
