This northwestern city gate, built in 1632 to the design of Jan Jacobszoon van Banchem, connected the Steenstraat via a drawbridge across the singel with the road to the villages Oegstgeest, Rijnsburg, Katwijk and the city Haarlem. It was therefore also called the Haarlemmerpoort. In 1867 the gate was demolished to make the city more accessible to traffic. Five of the seven other city gates suffered the same fate.
