More information

Van Hoytema worked for years in Amsterdam’s Artis Zoo, where he
recorded native and exotic species in drawings like these. Dutch
birds, particularly ducks and chickens, were his speciality and he
kept a separate sketchbook for them. He made these drawings as
studies for his own use and for sale - as in this case, to judge by the
monogram lower right.
