More information

This red chalk drawing shows a young woman seen
from the front, concentrating on bobbin lace on her lap. Her restrained gesture
and the calm composition emphasize both her focus and the refined
craftsmanship, while the subtle lines and warm tones create an intimate
atmosphere. The drawing likely served as a study for Maes’ painting of the same
subject, now in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. A compositional study
is held in Berlin, Kupferstichkabinett Staatliche Museen (inv. no. 16523).
