During his trip to Italy in 1664, Willem Schellinks drew Italian cityscapes and landscapes, as well as caves and caverns. He arrived in Rome on 1 April, where he drew this view of the Colosseum, among others. Schellinks drew the Colosseum several times, often executed in the same mixed technique of chalk with brown and grey washes.
