Salomon Koninck made this drawing as a study
for his painting ‘The Parable of the Labourers in the Vineyard’ in the
Hermitage, Saint Petersburg. The scene corresponds to the left part of the
painting and shows four men seated at a table, including the master of the
house, bookkeepers, and a treasurer. In the painting, labourers appear to the
right, receiving their wages. Rembrandt’s 1637 painting of the same subject
undoubtedly served as a model for Koninck.
