Jan Asselijn made this ink drawing in 1646 during his retreat from Italy. Depicted are the Roman city wall near the Porta San Paolo and the Pyramid of Cestius. The drawing is a design for the etching by French printmaker Gabriel Perelle, an impression of which is in the museum's collection (inv. no. L 1969/22 e). This etching was published by Perelle in a series of six prints of Italian landscapes. Asselijn drew the city wall and pyramid in mirror image, as he was aware that printing the plate would create a mirrored image. Perelle modified Asselijn's drawing before printing. He added an extra figure in the middle and provided the tree on the right with a canopy.
