It is not entirely certain which scene
Rembrandt depicted in this drawing of an elderly man wearing a tall hat in a
mountainous landscape. Initially, the figure was interpreted as the Old
Testament prophet Elijah, to whom God appears on Mount Horeb as the sound of a
gentle breeze. Because some lines in the lower right extend beyond the frame,
it is also suggested that the drawing was once larger on the right and may have
included additional figures. This could mean the subject depicts an episode
with the prophet Elisha or Elijah and several figures.
