In 1924, over the course of two months, the French sculptor Emile Bourdelle completed a bas-relief frieze depicting the Birth of Aphrodite for the theatre in Marseille. This drawing is probably his first design for the frieze, made in 1923, for the central group in the relief. In 1924 Bourdelle gave the drawing as a gift to Elie Vidal, agent-général of the Salon des Tuileries, probably in gratitude for ensuring that the frieze occupied a favourable position when it was exhibited at the Salon in 1924. It is not known how the drawing later came to the museum.
