This watercolour depicts the reception of Christopher Columbus at the court of King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella of Spain in April 1493, after he returned from his first voyage west to the islands of the present-day Bahamas, Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. He brought back gold, pearls, jewellery and plants that were taken from these islands. Columbus also abducted members of the Taíno, who can be seen in his entourage on the right. One of them is holding a Scarlet Macaw parrot. The French artist Eugène Devéria made another version of this subject in 1861, in an oil painting that is kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Pau in France.
