More information

Mantegna is one of the frst great artists known to have made prints. The varied engraving technique, powerful modelling and expressive
fgures are typical of those that survive. It is not certain whether this sheet was executed by Mantegna himself or by a pupil. The scene
shows how Christ went to Hell after his death and freed the dead from Limbo. A number of grotesque devils try in vain to stop him. Among the fgures to Christ’s right are Adam and Eve, who have already been freed.
