Author: Surya Stemerding

This anonymous drawing was copied from a woodcut by Niccolò Boldrini.[1] The drawing has the same orientation as the print, which means that it cannot be the preliminary drawing. The fact that the composition is identical to the print points to a copy. The drawing was sold at auction together with the print in 1927, which suggests that an earlier collector regarded the drawing as the design.[2] The inventor of the composition was probably not Boldrini himself, but Titian (c.1488-1576), who is mentioned as such on a mirror-image print dated 1792 by Dominique Vivant, Baron de Denon (1747-1825).[3]

Although the drawing was sold in 1927 as ‘anonymous Dutch’, the maker probably came from the Veneto, to judge by the typically Venetian watermark in the paper. The mark was used for centuries, so it provides nothing to go on in terms of dating.

Footnotes

[1] Inv. BdH 8433; Passavant VI. 242 no. 96. Boldrini produced several of Titian’s inventions in print.

[2] The description ‘Ajouté le dessin original en même grandeur’ (‘added the original design in the same size’) indicates that at that time the drawing was regarded as a preliminary drawing.

[3] 'Titiano in[venit]. De Non sc[ulpsit]. 1792'; London, British Museum, inv. X 1.99. The print in London differs in details from both the drawing and the print in Rotterdam. The farmer behind the plough’s hat and garment are not the same and the wheels under the plough are also different.
