According to an autograph inscription on the back of the sheet, this drawing was made in Venice in 1660. Quellinus ended his visit to Italy there in that year, and then settled in Antwerp. It is probably a design for an altarpiece which was never completed. The correction lower right is striking. Evidently he was not entirely satisfed with the group of fgures with a beggar, so he pasted a new version of it on a small piece of paper on top.
