Presumed Portrait of Fra Niccolò della Magna (Nicholaus Schomberg or Schönberg), used for the Head of St Stephen in the 'Madonna del Santuario', from the collection of Cattedrale di San Martino, Lucca.

The person depicted is a German priest, a disciple of Savonarola who

entered the Dominican order in 1498. He was born Nikolaus von Schönberg

(1472–1537) and was eventually elevated to cardinal. In the portrait

drawings he is about 33 years old, which fits with his youthful appearance.

The two stones in the skull, which are attributes of the martyr St Stephen,

were added during the painting process, along with the halo.
