In the years 1515-1516 Fra Bartolommeo painted an altarpiece with the 'Salvator Mundi', a risen Christ standing on a podium (now in the Galleria Palatina, Palazzo Pitti, Florence), with two side panels with prophets (now in the Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence), which was installed in the Cappella Billi in the church of Santissima Annunziata in Florence. In these two almost identical detailed studies we can see from the hatching lines that the artist originally had in mind a globe that was to have lain at the base of the podium. Ultimately he opted for a circular frame with a landscape. The two seated putti who support it on the left and the right were given wings in the painting. These two studies were primarily made to establish their poses. [text: Albert Elen]
