This drawing is a preparatory study for the 'Noli me tangere' (Paris, Musée du Louvre).
This second study clearly shows how the mannikin’s right arm as well as its
head were left out. The intention here was to draw a more forward-leaning
pose, making the fold across the back less voluminous and giving it a more
flowing drape, so the head and right arm are irrelevant here. This variant
was used virtually unchanged in the painting.
