This drawing is a preparatory study for 'The Mystic Marriage of St Catherine' (Paris, Musée du Louvre).
In this preparatory study the artist confined himself to the figure of the seated Virgin. Even the Christ Child has been omitted. The artist was concerned with the position of the figure on the throne, the position of the limbs and the folds of the cloak. The drawing was squared with red and black chalk and pricked through for transfer to a cartoon, the full-size preparatory drawing for the painting.
