A ‘Sacra conversazione’ is a scene of an enthroned Virgin and Christ Child surrounded by saints and sometimes also angels. This type of composition was inspired by altar pieces by Giovanni Bellini that Fra Bartolommeo had seen in the Venetian churches of San Giobbe and San Zaccaria. In this preparatory study the artist concentrated on the placement of the kneeling saint before the enthroned Virgin and the interaction between the figures.
