This is the composition drawing for a monumental altarpiece that Fra Bartolommeo and his assistants painted for the Compagnia de’ Contemplanti in Florence (formerly Kaiser Friedrich Museum, Berlin, but lost during WWII). In November 1508 the artist received 52 ducats for the commission. He drew separate studies for the individual figures, in which he worked out the postures and the use of light in detail.
