  • Adam Chen asked

Is there any additional information about the provenance of this drawing other than what is listed online? Any collector's marks or other documentation, for instance? I'm particularly interested in knowing where this drawing was in the late-18th and early-19th century. Thank you!

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Adam, Thank you for your question. The extensive provenance of the drawing, as listed online, shows that the drawing was with Benjamin West and then Thomas Lawrence, and then Samuel Woodburn in the late 18th/early 19th century. This provenance is already especially detailed. The drawings are not stamped as they were kept together in the albums since Gabburri’s time. For more information about the albums in general, see the recent exhibition catalogue on Fra Bartolommeo (Rotterdam 2017).
    The complete provenance:
Fra Bartolommeo’s nalatenschap (1517); zijn erfgenaam Fra Paolino da Pistoia (1488-1547), Florence; Suor Plautilla Nelli (1523-1588), Florence; Klooster van St. Catharina van Siena, Florence; Cavaliere Francesco Maria Niccolò Gabburri (1676-1742), Florence, verworven van het klooster in 1725 en gemonteerd in een van twee albums (1729); erven Gabburri; Kunsthandelaar William Kent, Londen, aangekocht van de erven Gabburri in 1758-1760; Benjamin West (1783-1820, L.419), Londen; zijn zoon Raphael West; Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830, L.2445), Londen; Kunsthandelaar Samuel Woodburn, Londen, aangekocht met de Collectie Lawrence in 1834, verkoopcat. 1836; De Prins van Oranje, later Koning Willem II der Nederlanden; zijn veiling, Den Haag (De Vries, Roos, Brondgeest) 12.08.1850, lot 281 (opgehouden); zijn dochter Prinses Sophie van Oranje-Nassau (1824-1897), Groothertogin van Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, Weimar; haar echtgenoot Groothertog Karl Alexander von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach (1818-1901) Weimar; hun kleinzoon Groothertog Wilhelm Ernst von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach (1876-1923), Weimar; Franz W. Koenigs (1881-1941, L.1023a), Haarlem, verworven in 1923; D.G. van Beuningen (1877-1955), Rotterdam, verworven met de Collectie Koenigs in 1940 en geschonken aan de Stichting Museum Boymans.
I hope this is helpful. Kind regards, Els

Composition Drawing for the ‘Madonna della Misericordia’ (Madonna of Mercy Surrounded by a Throng with St Dominic and the Donor), from the collection of Museo Nazionale di Villa Guinigi, Lucca.

The sole surviving composition drawing of this project reveals the basic composition, drawn spontaneously and exploring the possibilities, is less rigidly structured and more balanced than in the painting. Despite the damage, the semicircular form at the top is clearly visible. He subsequently moved and changed most of the bystanders around the dais, such as the kneeling St Dominic to the left at the front in this drawing, drawing some in separate studies.
