Composition Drawing for the ‘Madonna della Misericordia’ (Madonna of Mercy Surrounded by a Throng with St Dominic and the Donor), from the collection of Museo Nazionale di Villa Guinigi, Lucca.
The sole surviving composition drawing of this project reveals the basic composition, drawn spontaneously and exploring the possibilities, is less rigidly structured and more balanced than in the painting. Despite the damage, the semicircular form at the top is clearly visible. He subsequently moved and changed most of the bystanders around the dais, such as the kneeling St Dominic to the left at the front in this drawing, drawing some in separate studies.
