In the years 1515-1516 Fra Bartolommeo painted an altarpiece with the 'Salvator Mundi', a risen Christ standing on a podium (now in the Galleria Palatina, Palazzo Pitti, Florence), with two side panels with prophets (now in the Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence), which was installed in the Cappella Billi in the church of Santissima Annunziata in Florence. The altarpiece of the Salvator Mundi stood in a chapel under an organ loft. On each side of the central panel there were two smaller panels depicting the prophets Isaiah and Job. This is one of the studies for the seated prophet Isaiah on the panel on the left. Fra Bartolommeo used black chalk heightened with white to create the chiaroscuro effects that produced a spatially convincing composition.
