Fra Bartolommeo prepared the fgure of the kneeling Mary Magdalen in two studies. The feet of the dead Christ she clasps in the painting are omitted here. The artist concentrated on her pose, kneeling, supported on her elbows, with her head to one side. He added high-lights in white chalk to give the folds of her garment a realistic effect.
