More information

From the Renaissance onwards, drawing from classical examples, usually sculptures, was a standard part of the training in an artist’s
workshop. Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770), who had a large workshop in the 18th century, set his son Domenico just such a task. The young Domenico probably made this drawing after a plaster cast of a classical statue of the Roman emperor Domitian (AD 51-96, in power from AD 81).
