This Venetian 'veduta' (view) was probably made in situ in or near the Palazzo Gritti on the Grand Canal, with a view of the Santa Maria della Salute, the showpiece of the Venetian Baroque, built by architect Baldassare Longhena between 1631 and 1682. The drawing is a preliminary study for the right half of a painting by Guardi in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (inv. 3147).
