This drawing is one of the many preliminary studies for a series of frescos in Piacenza Cathedral, begun by Pierfrancesco Mazzuchelli (1573-1626) in 1625, and completed after his death by Guercino. Guercino often drew with red chalk to give his figures a warm tone and soft shadows, as it were bringing them to life.
