Author: Gert Jan van der Sman

The swift use of the pen allows us to locate this landscape drawing in the milieu of Domenico Campagnola. To the left of the centre a farmhouse and a small church have been placed in the space in a rather awkward way, an unrefined manner that differs too greatly from Domenico’s style to justify an attribution to the artist himself. The sheet was probably made in the second quarter of the sixteenth century.

In the composition of the image, this landscape drawing is similar to an anonymous sixteenth-century Venetian landscape drawing that was worked up by Rembrandt (1606-1669).[1] This indicates that the Rotterdam drawing was probably cut off at the top, but it would not have been much bigger originally. The drawing can be described as a rough impression of a rustic landscape in the style of Campagnola and Titian (c.1488-1576), without a reference to a specific topographical location. On the left a few small, schematically rendered figures can be seen climbing up next to a railing.
