Entry catalogue Italian Drawings 1400-1600

Author: Esmé van der Krieke

This drawing shows the Holy Family resting in a landscape. From the rough brushstrokes and hatching, as well as the unfinished details, the scene appears to have been swiftly set down on the sheet. Franz Koenigs attributed it to the Venetian artist Palma Giovane,[1] since when the drawing has remained unpublished.

Similar swift pen strokes can be seen in Palma’s drawings in New York[2] and Paris.[3] The Virgin’s pointed nose and the Christ Child’s chubby body also correspond to some extent. At the same time, however, this comparison reveals that in his studies Palma had more of an eye for detail and composition than appears in our drawing. The relationships between the figures he depicts are better connected, his landscapes are executed with greater finesse, and he used much less coarse hatching. An attribution to the artist himself is therefore not plausible. It is more likely that the drawing was made by an anonymous maker in the circle of Palma Giovane.
