This study from a life model was made for the kneeling figure of Mary Magdalene in the lower left section of a large altarpiece with God the Father, St Mary Magdalene and St Catherine of Siena, commonly know as 'Il Padre Eterno', that the artist painted in 1509 for the Dominican monastery on the Venetian island of Murano. Fra Bartolommeo received the commission in April 1508 during a visit to the monastery. When, in 1513, he had not yet received the payment he sold the painting to the Dominican monastery in Lucca (now in the Museo Nazionale di Villa Guinigi, Lucca).
