More information

The motif of the seated Virgin and Christ Child in front of her was possibly
derived from Michelangelo’s marble sculpture that is known as the ‘Bruges
Madonna’ and which Fra Bartolommeo must have known. In this study the
Virgin Mary is seated on the left, alone and without a cloak. Her head is
summarily indicated, but otherwise she corresponds with the rendering in
the painting. The pose of the Christ Child was varied in different studies.
