The two outermost figures in the rows of apostles command a prominent
place in this composition: they sit in front and are the only ones who are
wholly visible. There are two studies of the apostle on the left. In this first
study the artist is still searching for the correct pose for the hands and
head. The figure has marked highlights in white chalk on the right side, and
for the chiaroscuro the background has there been hatched with black
chalk.
