Entry catalogue Italian Drawings 1400-1600

Author: Surya Stemerding

Since the 1920s this drawing in pen and ink had been classified as ‘Venetian, second half sixteenth century’. It was made later than that, though, and is probably a copy after an unknown original by Carracci.[1] Comparison with his autograph landscape in the museum  (I 539) reveals that the copyist had slavishly followed his rapid parallel, horizontal hatching for the foliage of the trees, eliminating the spontaneity that is so typical of Carracci’s drawings. It is probably a deliberate imitation of his style by a contemporary follower.
