Entry catalogue Italian Drawings 1400-1600

Author: Gert Jan van der Sman

On a visit to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen on 18 May 1962, Philip Pouncey placed this charming drawing of a child’s head in the circle of Benozzo Gozzoli (c.1420-1497). However, the boy’s facial type is too far removed from Gozzoli’s style to justify an association with this artist. Carmen Bambach suggested a possible attribution to Lorenzo di Credi (1456/1459-1537), which would push the date to the end of the fifteenth century.

The outlines of the boy’s face and the edges of the eyelids were almost certainly retouched by a later hand, making it difficult to judge the original drawing style. In the absence of specific points of contact, we opt for the description ‘Florence, c.1480-1490’.
