Ask anything

  • CAROLINA TRUPIANO KOWALCZYK asked

    Good Morning,
I would like to know the bibliography pf this drawing by Panini and the other (Man standing, (inv. I 324 PK).
    Thank you very much

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

    Dear Carolina,
I have looked in our collection registration system and this is what I found: I 214 was exhibited twice in 1998 and might have an entry in the catalogue:
    1) De perfecte zinloosheid van de onmogelijke ruimte - Piranesi als het grote voorbeeld van M.C. Escher zaterdag 8 augustus 1998 - zondag 25 oktober 1998 in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen
    2) Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Grafiek en Tekeningen, zaterdag 7 maart 1998 - zondag 3 mei 1998 in the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht.
About the second work (I 324):
Inventory cards say : "Toeschrijving aan Pannini door J. Byam Shaw (bij Koenigs als Ital. 18e eeuw) I 323 als pendant van I 324. / In British Museum bevindt zich een schetsboek van Pannini met dergelijke figuren. Vgl. artikel Old Master Drawings (mededeling van Hylton Thomas, 17 IX 1953)" @@ Deze tekening heeft twee inventarisnummers: I 323 en I 324. Bij restauratie voorjaar 1996 bleek dat beide delen oorspronkelijk aan elkaar moeten hebben gezeten; de structuur van het papier loopt door alsook de degen van de rechterfiguur."
Roughly translated this means that the drawing was attributed to Pannini by Shaw (while Koenings just said 18th century Italian) and that, according to a certain Hylton Thomas in 1953, there is a schetchbook by Pannini with similar drawings. Moreover a restoration in 1996 has brought to light that I 324 originally was attached to I 323, as ths structure of the paper and the sword which runs from one drawing to the other one show. Our curator of drawings, Rosie Razzall, will answer you more extensively. Kind regards, Els
