After training in Venice, Amigoni worked mainly abroad: in Bavaria, England, France and Naples and fnally as a court painter in Spain. He is best known for his painted portraits and large decorative paintings in Rococo style. This drawing is very like the head of Callisto in two paintings by Amigoni telling the story of Jupiter and Callisto. The drawing may have served as a preliminary study for them.
