This drawing shows a 'wipmolen', a type of windmill used to drain land. Claes Jansz. Visscher made it as a preparatory study for the print ‘Ut emergant’, published in Roemer Visscher’s ‘Sinnepoppen’ (1614), a popular emblem book. The Latin motto ‘Ut emergant’, meaning ‘that they may flourish’, refers to Dutch polders, which would remain flooded and infertile without windmills.
