More information

This drawing of a seated female nude is an example of drawing from live models. From the 17th century, it became essential for artists in the Netherlands to study living models. While drawing from male models was practised in most academies, from the 1640s, nude women also posed in Amsterdam academies. For artists, depicting the nude body was a measure of their artistic skill. This drawing was therefore probably made by Jan van Noord as an exercise in drawing the body rather than as a figure study for a painting.

The drawing is executed in two colours of chalk (black and white) on blue-grey paper. Van Noordt learned this technique from his teacher Jacob Adriaensz Backer. This drawing was therefore previously attributed to Backer.
