Cézanne often stayed at the family’s country house, Le Jas de Bouffan (Provençal for ‘The House of Winds’), not far from his home in Aix-en-Provence. The artist depicted the avenue of oaks on many occasions, for instance in a painting dated around 1868-1870 (National Gallery, London). The drawing was probably made at about the same time.
