Courbet was not a prolific draughtsman, and the location of this forest scene may be the forest of Fontainebleau, where many artists associated with the Barbizon school came to paint, or the countryside near Frankfurt am Main, where he travelled in 1858. Courbet was not a close member of the Barbizon group, although he exhibited several landscape paintings at the Salon.
