This drawing is a preparatory study for a print in Roemer Visscher’s ‘Sinnepoppen’ (1614), one of the most popular emblem books of the seventeenth century. The book combines images, mottos, and commentary. Claes Jansz. Visscher drew this confident ice skater to accompany the motto ‘Ghoeffent derf’ (those who are trained, dare), an encouragement to learn early what will serve you later.
