On the advice of the artists Troyon and Boudin, Monet focussed on drawing during his early period in Le Havre and Paris. Drawings form only a modest part of Monet's oeuvre. The few that are known, like this one, were preparatory drawings for paintings and almost always enhanced with colours. His figure studies are extremely rare.
