This portrait is generally assumed to be of Léon Edouard Koëlla-Leenhoff (1852-1927), the illegitimate son of Suzanne Leenhoff. She was a Dutch pianist who had made her home in Paris and who taught piano to Manet and his brother Eugene from 1849. Manet acted as the child's godfather at the christening, and is widely believed to have been Léon's father.
