Corot visited the village of Olevano Romano in the spring and summer of 1827, towards the end of his first stay in Italy between 1825 and 1828. He made several drawings, oil studies and paintings of this view, including another study in the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas. The drawing shows the landscape around the village with the rocks of the Monte San' Arcangelo on the far right. The inscription 'Près de la Serpentara' refers to the forest and road between Olevano and Bellegra.
