Armand Gautier (1825-1894) was a painter and printmaker and a close friend of Courbet. They were imprisoned together in the Sainte Pélagie prison in Paris because of their republican sympathies and involvement with the Paris Commune, a people’s uprising in Paris and other French towns in 1871 that was swiftly suppressed. Courbet had painted a portrait of him some years earlier (1867).
