More information

Compositions like these are known as ‘Fête d’amour’ or ‘Fête galante’, a genre introduced by Watteau and accepted by the Académie. Here we see a festive meal that is getting slightly out of hand, with some of the guests firting outrageously, hence the old title ‘Les suites de l’orgie’. Scenes like these, often with slightly erotic undertones, were extremely popular at that time.
