This is a spontaneous copy which the young Van Dyck made during his apprenticeship in the studio of Hendrik van Balen in Antwerp after a variant of Pieter van Bruegel the Elder's painting 'The Conversion of Saul' (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna).
