Self-Portrait with Raised Sabre

Rembrandt van Rijn (in 1634)

Ask anything

  • Fred Staff asked

What is the best way to tell if the etching I have is a lifetime pressing?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Fred, that's a difficult question to answer from afar. Can you see if it's a reproduction or an original print? If it's really an original, then you can see if there's a watermark present. As far as I know there are no know late (18th or 19th century) prints of this specific etching. For further info, please check the parts on Rembrandt in the New Hollstein (vol I, p. 214, nr. 134) Best of luck! Peter van der Coelen, curator
