Entry catalogue Italian Drawings 1400-1600

Author: Klazina Botke

This is a drawing from the collection of Adriaan Domela Nieuwenhuis, who donated his large holdings of prints and some 400 drawings to the museum in 1923. They include 56 Italian works, 32 of them from the period 1400-1600. In his inventory book this one was listed as ‘old Italian’.[1] The study is of a putto by an unidentified artist and drawn with red chalk and white heightening on blue paper. It may come from the same workshop as a similar drawing in black chalk DN 126/23, and is vaguely reminiscent of the work of Francesco Curradi (1570-1661).[2] This artist had a preference for chalk combined with white heightening on blue paper, but the figures in his studies are usually sharper and drawn with greater clarity.
