Grosvenor once charactericized his work as 'concepts, that function in space, between floor and ceiling'. In the case of his large geometrical sculptures of the late sixties this definition of their place was taken literally: fixed to the ceiling, his work gave the impression of hovering. This sculpture of 1975 is closer to the floor, while the unstable, hovering character which this cylinder that scarcely touches the ground has of itself is precisely suppressed. The emphasis in the sculpture lies on the inaccesible, partly because the cylinder is drawn inwards at each end. The rough, dark surface of the steel, which is coverd with a greasy coating, produces an effect of weight.
