Hymenoptera

    What is it ?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hallo Maxence, this is an antwork by the famous Belgian sculptor Panamarenko (1940-2019). His whole life Panamarenko was fascinated by flying, as well as mechanics. iHis sculptures are like fantastical creatures, which potentially could fly. The title of this work, 'Hymenoptera', refers to a group of insects with transparant wings, such as flies, bees, wasps, ants. Wikipedia says there are over 150.000 different species, and with this sculpture the artist has added one more. Kind regards, Els
