In contrast to Maillol's sculptures, those by Wessel Couzijn exhibit a great liveliness. The projecting edges and deep hollows in 'Seated Figure from Greece' give the bronze an almost frayed character, from which the figure derives its vulnerable, melancholy air. Couzijn made the figure out of sand and water during a stay in Greece, after which it was cast first in plaster and then in bronze. The human figure came back into Couzijn's work with this sculpture, but it is actually a human form created by the amalgamation of elements which in themselves are non-figurative.
